Gypsum Train Yard is an old rail and quarry yard northwest of the Cap Counterfeiting Shack and west of Bitter Springs. From a distance it looks like rusted track and a few buildings, but the yard is patrolled by blind deathclaws and young deathclaws, which makes it one of the riskiest stops in this part of the map. Do not wander in at low level expecting scrap and scavengers, and bring weapons that can punch through tough hides.
The Gypsum Quarry Office is home to three giant ants and ten ant egg clutches, mostly holding ant meat, with a chance at ant nectar or an ant egg on the bodies. A Sunset Sarsaparilla star bottle cap sits on the desk at the back of the office, though it does not always appear and can get knocked through the desk during the fight. Near the cliffs there is an irradiated pool you can drink from in a pinch.
The real draw for many players is the unmarked train tunnel north of the yard. Both ends have a Very Hard lock, and it runs into Nellis Air Force Base. Using it lets you skip the Boomers' artillery bombardment on the normal approach to their base, which matters a great deal if you have not yet earned their trust and still want to reach them alive.
How to get there
From Vault 34, head east and slightly north until you reach the rail yard below the cliffs west of Bitter Springs.
Notable loot
- Sunset Sarsaparilla star bottle cap (desk at the back of the Gypsum Quarry Office)
- Ant meat, ant nectar and ant eggs (egg clutches and ants in the office)
Tips
- Bring armor-piercing ammo or high damage weapons for the deathclaws.
- With 100 Lockpick, use the north train tunnel to reach Nellis without crossing the artillery zone.
- If the star cap is missing, reload an earlier save or toss a grenade near the desk to shake it loose.
