The Thorn is an underground fighting arena in the old sewers just outside Westside's south entrance, run by Red Lucy. You get in through a manhole under a wooden frame with a sign pointing down to it. Below, spectators and guards watch from raised catwalks while caged creatures wait along the walls for their turn in the pit. The doors stay shut between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m., so plan to visit during the day or evening.

There are two ways to make money here. You can pay Red Lucy to stage a custom fight between creatures and win back more than your stake if your side wins, or you can step into the arena yourself against fire geckos, giant mantises, radscorpions, night stalkers, cazadores or deathclaws. You choose how many to face, and the prize depends on what you fight. Companions are told to wait while you fight, although ED-E may still shoot from the sidelines.

Red Lucy also starts Bleed Me Dry, asking you to bring back eggs from giant mantises, radscorpions, fire geckos, night stalkers, cazadores and deathclaws so she can breed new fighters. It is a long hunt across the Mojave, with Vault 22 supplying the mantis eggs, and it pays well in caps, a hunting rifle, a hunting revolver and the unique Dinner Bell shotgun. Finishing it also lets you sleep in her chamber for the Well Rested bonus.

How to get there

Fast travel to the Westside South Entrance and look for the manhole under a wooden frame just outside the gate.

Tips

  • Never walk into the arena while a fight is running, or the guards turn on you.
  • Start with fire geckos or mantises before you try deathclaws, which come one or three at a time.
  • Red Lucy asks for one egg type at a time, and some egg piles only appear once the quest is running, so take Bleed Me Dry before you go hunting.
