Hoover Dam is the reason the NCR and Caesar's Legion are fighting over the Mojave. The pre-War dam still generates power and controls the Colorado River, and whoever holds it holds the region. The NCR has held it since 2274, beat back the Legion in the first battle four years before the game begins, and has fortified it heavily since, with trooper barracks, checkpoints and heavy weapons positioned along the crest and inside the power plants.
The dam is a full quest hub for NCR players. Colonel Cassandra Moore directs the Republic's hard line strategy and hands out tasks in For the Republic, Part 2, Quartermaster Bardon sells supplies, and there are engineers and troopers with smaller problems. The visitor center, offices and power plant interiors are extensive. Every main story path ends here in the second battle of Hoover Dam, whether you fight for the NCR, the Legion, Mr. House or an independent New Vegas.
Until the endgame the dam is safe for anyone not hated by the NCR, and the interiors are worth exploring for loot and for the sheer scale of the place. Once you commit to the final battle it becomes a war zone of Legion assault squads, NCR troopers and whatever allies you have gathered along the way. Save before you start, because there is no going back once the fighting begins.
How to get there
Take the highway east from Boulder City; the dam and its NCR checkpoints are at the end of the road on the Colorado.
